NBA news: Gordon Hayward sends major injury update to Boston Celtics fans | Other | Sport

The forward hasn’t been seen in action since landing awkwardly just five minutes into the Celtics’ opening NBA game of the season against the Cleveland Cavaliers last October.

Hayward had hoped to return from his ankle injury before the end of last season but suffered a further setback when he was told he needed more surgery back in May.

However, ahead of the Celtics’ first pre-season game against the Charlotte Hornets later this month, the 28-year-old insists he is close to returning.

“I would say I’m basically 100 per cent,” Hayward said at the Auerbach Center this week.

“There’s certain things that I think are going to take time – even if I was 100 per cent healthy, I’m not 100 per cent as far as basketball-wise, just because I haven’t played in a year.

“I’m trying to figure those things out.

“The last step for me as far as from a physical standpoint is a little explosion, that little last juice bounce that you get.

“So that’s going to take me the longest time.

“But like I said, for the most part, I feel very good.”

Hayward has been teasing fans all summer with regular social media posts showing him returning to the practice court.

Celtics team-mate Kyrie Irving also looks close to full-fitness as he too bids to be ready for his side’s pre-season opener in two weeks time.

The point-guard last played an NBA game back in March before becoming sidelined with a left-knee problem.

Irving underwent two surgeries, the first removing a tension wire and the second to remove screws from a previous operation.

However, Celtics fans were also treated to footage of Irving back in action this week as he took part in some training with fellow stars.

A video posted by NBA coach Irv Roland on Instagram showed the 26-year-old playing alongside the likes of Kevin Durant and James Harden.
